John Finnegan

Position: Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Wide Receivers

Head Coach John Finnegan has been a head football coach for the last 27 years, the past 10 at Seton Hall Prep. His 2012 Pirates were his 19th playoff squad in the last 20 years. During his 27 seasons, his teams have had 20 winning seasons and posted a 180-92-2 record.

Coach "Finn" was named Essex County Coach of the 90's by the Star Ledger and in 1999 received the Monsignor Larkin Award from the Mercier Club. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at Immaculate Conception High School where he served as Athletic Director for 13 years and Head Football Coach for 17 seasons (1986 - 2002) winning 2 State Titles in 1994 and '98. In addition to his success in football, Coach Finn has coached Track & Field, where his teams won a total of 15 State Championships, 6 Conference Titles and 5 Essex County Championships.

Coach Finn was inducted into the Essex County Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011. In 1988, he was named Coach of the Year by the Star Ledger for Indoor Track. Coach Finn played 3 years at Kean College (where John Allen of SHP was the Head Coach). He completed his degree at Montclair State University with a B.A. in History and received his M.A. in Education from Caldwell College. John and his wife, Ann, have three children, Nolan, Jacqueline and Bryan.


Mark Smith

Position: Defensive Coordinator, Inside Linebackers

Coach Mark Smith has been the Defensive Coordinator at Seton Hall Prep since 2001. He was an assistant coach at Depaul High School and Clifton High School in the early 80's. Mark went on to be the Defensive Coordinator at Columbia High School from 1985 to 1988 and then became Head Coach at Columbia from 1989 to 1999.

Coach Smith resides in Maplewood with his wife, Bernadine, and has 4 children; Jessica, Matthew, Cliff, and Summer. He received his B.S. from Seton Hall University and an M.A. from Kean University.


Dennis Gunn

Position: Running Backs

Coach Dennis Gunn joined the coaching staff at SHP in 1995. He coaches the running back positions.

Dennis Gunn grew up in Port Jervis, NY and Butler, NJ, where he played 4 years of varsity football, garnering all-county and all-state honors. He graduated in 1978 from Montclair State University with a B.S. in Industrial Education and Technology. He played 4 years of football at MSU as a running back and was selected Captain in his senior year. After college graduation, Coach Gunn taught Industrial Technology and coached varsity running backs at West Milford High School. He left coaching in 1981 to join the financial services firm of Mandhardt, Sharkey and Gorman where he was a Certified Financial Planner. He resides in West Orange with his wife, Judy, and has 2 daughters, Allison and Rebecca.


Jim Cowan

Position: Offensive Line, Special Teams Coordinator

Coach Jim Cowan joined the Seton Hall Prep staff in 2003. During his first tenure he coached both the Offensive and Defensive Lines. In 2006 Jim took a brief hiatus from coaching before returning to the program full time in 2008 continuing to work with the linemen. Coach Cowan also coordinates several Special Teams for the Pirates.

As a high school player, Coach Cowan played on two State Championship football teams. He began coaching high school football in 1990 and served as Head Coach at Glen Ridge High School for 6 years. He resides in Bloomfield with his wife, Pattie, and his daughter, Emerald.


Douglas Hellstern

Position: Defensive Backs, Special Teams Coordinator

Coach Doug Hellstern is entering his 15th year of coaching and 8th at Seton Hall Prep. Doug coaches the Defensive Backs and coordinates the Pirate Special Teams. Coach Hellstern completed his undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University in 2000 where he played Outside Linebacker and spent 1 year in a G.A. capacity coaching Tight Ends.

After college Doug spent 6 years (3 years under Jim Cowan) coaching at his high school alma mater, Glen Ridge, where he worked with the Offensive Ends, Defensive Backs and coordinated the Special Teams. In 2005 he joined SHP working first with the Sophomore and JV programs before joining the Varsity in 2008.

Doug earned his Master's Degree in Curriculum and Assessment from Marygrove College. He and his wife, Bonnie, reside in Clifton.


Barney Lantry

Position: Quarterbacks

Coach Barney Lantry has spent the last 4 seasons at SHP as the Quarterbacks Coach. He has a B.S. from Norwich University where he was the starting QB and has a Masters in School Personnel Services. Coach Lantry has over 20 years experience as a HS football coach where he was the Pope John Offensive Assistant, Offensive Assistant for Coach Finnegan at Montclair Immaculate and works in the same capacity at Seton Hall Prep.

Coach Lantry is involved in private business and resides in Allamuchy with his wife, Patsy, and sons, Colin and Patrick.


Stanley Woods

Position: Defensive Line

Coach Stanley "Tony" Woods was born and raised in Newark, NJ, attended Seton Hall Prep and the University of Pittsburgh. He currently works in the Newark Public School System.

While at Seton Hall Prep Tony earned 3 varsity letters in football, 3 varsity letters in basketball, and was First Team All Essex County, First Team All State, and First Team Parade All American his senior year. The Men of Essex County named Tony their 1983 Outstanding Athlete. He received 120 athletic scholarships and was inducted into the Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame in 1989. At the University of Pittsburgh he was First Team All American, a 4 letter winner and finished his college career with 31 sacks, which is the third all time at the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1987 Tony was a first round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks. He played 10 years in the NFL: 6 seasons with the Seahawks, 1 season with the Los Angeles Rams and 3 seasons with the Washington Redskins. He has been a high school football coach for 10 years: Westside High School for 7 years,Barringer High School for 1 year and Weequahic High School for 1 year. Tony is married to Clemmen Woods and has 4 children.


Mike Hulsy

Position: Outside Linebackers

Coach Mike Hulsy was raised in Morristown. Mike has a B.A. from Dartmouth in history, and an M.A. from Brown in Early Modern British History. He is entering his 13th year as a member of the Seton Hall Prep History Department. This will be his 7th year with the football program, first working with the Sophomore and JV programs in 2006. This past season marked Coach Hulsy's first year with the Varsity working on the defensive side of the ball with the Outside Linebackers. Mike currently resides in Morristown with his wife, Megan, and their 3 children.


Seann Farrell

Position: Outside Linebackers

Coach Seann Farrell coaches the Outside Linebackers along with Coach Hulsy while also working with the Running Backs at the Sophomore and JV levels. This will be Seann's 4th year at Seton Hall Prep teaching Algebra. He graduated from Fordham University in 2005 with a degree in Economics. Seann played football for the Rams and was part of the 2002 Patriot League Championship Team. He also graduated from Delbarton School in 2001 where he played both football and lacrosse. He was a member of the team that won a State Championship in football in 1998.

Tony Bolton

Coach Tony Bolten played football at Vailsburg High School. Tony coached the Defensive Line at West Side High School, Barringer High School and Weequahic High School. This will be his 10th year coaching high school football. He is employed by the Newark Board of Education. Tony is married to Adriane Belton and his children are Cheynne, Tiffany and Miya.
